the policies of nancy pelosi, if you just compare them, technocratically speaking, nancy pelosi never lost a vote. she never once got so confused and lost control of the group she was supposed to be leading, she never got caught out saying something was going to pass. she never put up something to pass and had it fail. whether or not you like what nancy pelosi stands for, as a speaker of the house, nancy pelosi was good at her job. john boehner is not good at his job. we've ventured this as a hypothesis very early on in his speakership, i mean right from the beginning. it seemed like there might be something amiss, right? on the first day as speaker, he tried to have republicans pull off the stunt where they would read the whole constitution from the floor of the house. but even on day one, john boehner could not manage his own symbolic gesture. they skipped parts of the constitution. they skipped parts they did not like. and some parts they skipped because they were reading it out of a loose leaf binder and the pages stuck together. right then we should have known that was a bad sign. joh

continue to grow and flourish. with warmest regards, nancy pelosi". thank you very much. [applause] >> so mayor lee, senator leno, state assembly member and leaders and ladies and gentlemen. it's a real honor for me to celebrate with you today the start of the italian culture in the united states. nancy pelosi was with our foreign minister in washington dc, but san francisco is the first major city after washington dc that follows suit, that follows washington dc, so again a little like the giants that want to be number one. today is december, 12, 2012 which is 12-12-12. kind of scary. i would like to quote rem. "it's the end of the world as we know it but we're just fine". we are just fine because we're beginning really 12 months that will be exciting and fun for all of us. as you all have mentioned italians have made a lasting contributions in building this city, and in making what it is, the city that is international, innovative and open. it's difficult to name names but let me mention angela rosy and judge misconnie and in city hall and in the hearts and minds of san francisca

nancy pelosi. [applause] >> who is also keeping track on the giants. >> you know mr. mayor i always listen attentively to every world you say but i know you want me to say it's the bottom of the ninth and one out and in a matter of minutes we have another cause for celebration and you said jam san francisco didn't happen last week. we may have another potential for this weekend as well. thank you mr. mayor for your kind words. thank you everyone for the role you played in making this important day possible. i am here with my son paul and he can attest to the fact we are part of the 30 stockton crowd. we used to take it downtown and we would say "here comes the bus. there goes the bus". because it was always crowded mr. secretary. it would always be crowded and today is one things that contributes to the mobility of families, bringing people to work to play and improve their quality of life. secretary lahood has been one of the truest friends to san francisco. he has been a leader that has -- [applause] -- he has helped us make our case to the white house, to omb, and the rest

, but that is after dropping off. >> we have learned that nancy pelosi is saying that senate leaders will try to craft a fiscal cliff deal. as ben said, they are not giving any details, no specifics, they're not going to, but nancy pelosi said it will try to craft some sort of deal to avoid heading off the edge of the fiscal cliff. >>> the outgoing prime minister mario monti said he will contest the general election in february. he will lead a coalition of supporting his reform agenda. his appointment last year as the head of the technocratic government sought to end the financial crisis. former prime minister silvio berlusconi is rounding out his new year with a divorce, pinning his ex-wife almost $4 million per month. he was accused of having relationships with young women. the venezuelan president hugo chavez cents a message of faith to his supporters from his hospital bed. the message said that well- wishers and supporters were helping his recovery following the cancer operation. there is been speculation over whether his health has left him fit to lead the country. >>> a 6-year-old british girl w

[applause] >>> members of christopher stevens family, ladies and gentlemen, let me first thank chris stevens' brothers and sisters for their warm and delightful insights into what he was really like. thank you so much. that was fantastic what you did for us. christopher stevens was obviously an extraordinary human being and contributor. every year at stanford we have a group of what we call national security fellows come. they were roughly army, navy, air force, state department. a couple weeks ago we had a meeting and the first person i called on was an army colonel. i said where were you last? he said in libya. i said did you know christopher stevens? he said everybody knew christopher stevens. he was our leader, fluent in arabic, constructive, posi

, the senator from california, the hon. dianne feinstein. >> mr. speaker, nancy pelosi, mrs. bush, harry reid, leader mcconnell, secretary of state hillary clinton and my colleagues in government this is a special day to honor a special person in a special place. for many years i have followed tragedies and victories of this uncommonly courageous and persistent woman. in 1988 she quickly rose to be the voice of democracy in burma creating the lead for democracy, elections followed in 1990 when her party won 80% but that joy turned to tragedy and the the military junta and aung san suu kyi spent 3 decades under house arrest unable to visit her dying husband. in 1996 i recall senator bill cohen approaching with senator mccain to sponsor a burma sanction bill, sanctions were put in place in 1997 and only loosened in july of this year. senator mcconnell became one of aung san suu kyi's chief advocates and we continue to work on behalf of the people of burma. in 2003 following an assassination attempt senator mcconnell and i worked to pass an important man the remains in place today, an effort to

like the meeting may have broken up. there goes nancy pelosi, and we are told now house speaker boehner may have already left, and, no, they are not talking to reporters. nancy is looking for her car to leave the white house, and we're not getting anybody talking to the reporters at this point, so maybe we'll get some -- and i'm told now the futures market in the after-hours pegs is extending the losses that we've been seeing in the last hour of trade. maybe we'll get eamon javers to get in front of the camera when we come back. stay tuned. . speaker nancy pelosi helped create the oce as a solution. in just four years they have done more than 100 investigations of lawmakers raising serious questions about possible congressional misdeeds. in 37 of those investigations, the oce referred them on to the actual house ethics committee for further review, meaning that in those 37 cases, the oce found reason to believe that house ethics and sometimes federal laws were likely violated. so why exactly does congress want to kill it? well, actually, that's hard to say. folks like these who have in the past voted to cut the oce budget or limit its powers refused to talk to us. for those who would talk, opinions were mixed. >> i think it's important there be some way for the public, for someone outside of congress to raise issues about the conduct of members of congress. one of the things that -- is it oce, oce has sent to the ethics committee was actually pretty flimsy. >> i supported it the first time, i'll support it again. >> i don't think it's working well. >> is there anything oce has done specifically that might have rubbed the congr

to be leader nancy pelosi because she may have to deliver some democratic votes to get something done. >> reporter: absolutely. pelosi and mcconnell are really going to sort of step into the center stage at this point in time. they are going to be crucial as well as, of course, house speaker john boehner, but really there's going to be a lot of focus right now on the senate because, as you remember, house speaker john boehner tried to get his own bill passed through the house. that didn't happen. he didn't have enough votes, so essentially everything shifts right now to the senate. so harry reid, mitch mcconnell, nancy please elosi on the house to say here are the number of democrats i could get if you offer a compromise package. but this is really a tough situation because there's so little time left and we've already seen the markets impacted by this. so if we do go over the cliff, if you look at the polls, most americans saying republicans will bear the brunt. they will blame republicans, but the bottom line is the president will get a lot of blame as well because this is going to

to make that happen. that means, who do you need? nancy pelosi and you're going to have to get democrats to get something through the house. and so, i certainly think republicans hurt themselves in their leverage and look at the polling, 51% of americans have a favorable view of democrats, 31% of americans have a favorable view of republicans, and i can't imagine after watching what happened last night that those numbers for republicans have gotten better. i imagine they've gotten worse. i think the last thing i'll say here is for speaker boehner, he is in a very weakened position in terms of, you know, trying to bargain because he couldn't -- the plan "b" was a terrible, terrible deal from the democrats' perspective. had lots of sweeteners that the republicans wanted in terms of cuts. and he couldn't get the votes for it. >> well, for a lot of reason. dan greenhaus, you know what happens? if the fiscal cliff goes to january, the middle class tax cuts won't be extended, right? they end. but if you're a republican in the house, you'll be voting for a tax reduction. in other words, the fir

. >> the american people have a right to be very upset with this congress. >> president obama has invited nancy pelosi, john boehner, mitch mcconnell, and harry reid to the white house this afternoon for a fiscal cliff summit. >> here we are five days from the new year, and we might finally start talking. >> today's white house meeting might be the last chance to come to an agreement. that's because it takes time for a bill to work its way through both chamber of commerce. >> i don't know time wise how it can happen now. >> under senate rules, the only way a bill could make its way through the procedural hurdles in time is if every senator agrees not to. they'll have 24 hours. outside the beltway, carlino will be watching. >> everyone is kind of in a wait-and-see and fingers-crossed per expect tichb right now. >> since 1930 this is only the fifth time congress has worked after christmas. and today's summit is the first time president obama has met face to face with congressional leaders since mid-november. duarte, tick tock. >> thank you. >>> general schwarzkopf is being remembered this morning

? >> the president really scaled back his ambitions for the immediate time. he said, look, guys, nancy pelosi, come back, try to do the minimum, try to do the least amount of harm. and then come up with some way to say that we'll address bigger issues in the new year. >> he proposed tonight a smaller package, a smaller deal. what will this mean for the economy? what will it mean for the deficit if this small deal, mini deal is passed? >> well, that could be a big problem because basically he's left out a lot of critical issues. the sequester. we didn't hear him talk about that so we don't know how they'll deal with the automatic spending cuts and defense. and he didn't talk about the physician payment issue. physician under medicare are expected to get a 30% cut at the beginning of year. we don't know how that will work out. >> and he didn't say anything about the debt limit and this is one of the things he wanted in this fiscal cliff deal. by leaving that out, are we in for another big fight next year? >> it certainly looks like it. it seems to be-- and i've heard this from many people-- that repu

stakes negotiations, harry reid and mitch mcconnell and john boehner and nancy pelosi are joining president obama and the vice-president. the white house insists the president is not putting new offers on the table but there are reports of a compromise to raise tax rates for them. both sides say thar are disappointed. >> it is totally a lack of courage to deal with these issues. from washington to wall street there is a sense of gloom but the prospects of deal. here in dc a new furlough warning went out to federal workers, deep spending cuts and tax hikes go into effect for every 1 on new year's eve if congress doesn't take action. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thanks, if the president and congress are not able to avoid the fiscal cliff experts say people here in california will be hit especially hard because prop 30 voted into law in november will mean higher sales taxes and income taxes on the state's top earners. the fiscal cliff would add to that, hitting all americans with higher taxes. >> i don't know there is a word to describe how pissed the public is going to be,

president obama's previous offers and the morse -- most senior democrat in the house, nancy pelosi. what is the cliff and can be avoided? >> the house of representatives will be going back into session sunday but at this point we do not know what kind of measure they have before them that they can consider for a vote. there has been no indication from the white house or the republican leadership that they are anywhere near any kind of makings of a deal that they could present to the house republican leadership -- or the house republican rank-and-file who so far have been adamantly opposed to tax increases at any level of income, which is an absolute prerequisite for president obama. if they do not come to some kind of agreement, but that tax to be voted on -- and there is doubt that it is logistically possible before new year's day -- then the most immediate impact would be the loss all unemployment relief checks for 2 million americans as well as payroll tax holiday that will come to an end, which means tax increases that over the year could total 2000-$3,000 a year for a family. >> sch

in the back. >> good afternoon. thank you to nancy pelosi and for you panelists for providing this informative seminars. for our young company, we are a distribution company. i just heard you mention that you do not loan for the sale of alcohol. is that separate from distribution of wine? >> s.p.a. -- sba makes loans to winery's, stores that sell wine. i am not exactly sure what role you play in distribution. the federal government ought -- got out of prohibiting alcohol and long time ago. we are not in the business of regulating all bohol, beverage distribution or sale. we make loans to businesses who sell alcoholic beverages, restaurants, stores. so is not an sp a prohibition. it is regulated on a local level. we have made loans to a lot of businesses that have some degree of an alcoholic beverages, one distribution. >> terrific. following up to that, can you give any advice on particular resources that would speak perhaps to any tax benefits, subsidies in place for both domestic distribution of wine, as well as exports? >> why don't we take it off line. i think what is the case, there is a

:15, it was all over. nancy pelosi left the meeting without making a comment but harry reid headed to the senate floor to address members of congress&so did mitch mcconnell. both men described the negotiations as positive and constructive and say the next 24 hours are critical. >> we are engaged in discussions. the majority leader and myself and the white house in the hopes that we can come forward as early as sunday and have a recommendation that i can make to my conference and the majority leader can make to his conference. so, we'll be working hard to see if we can get there in the next 24 hours. >> whatever we come up with is going to be imperfect. some people are not going like it, some people will like less, but that is where we are. and i feel confident that we have an obligation to do the best we can. >> reporter: as tom mentioned, just a few moments ago, we heard from the president, too, on his prospects for keeping the nation from plummeting off the fiscal cliff. >> if an agreement is not reached in time between senator reid and senator mcconnell, then i will urge senator reid to bring

and nancy pelosi. returning to capitol hill mitch mcconnell went to the senate floor saying he is optimistic there can be a deal. he believes it can come by sunday afternoon, and at that point he would go back to the president with whatever it is he and reid are agreeing to. he said's optimistic that the next 24 hours are critical. however, tennessee senator bob cochran says even if a deal does get done don't expect too much. >> we're goakd up with a small kick the can down the road bill that creates another fiscal cliff to deal with this fiscal cliff. >> the president did say deja vu all over again. if corker is right, we are going to say some of the same machinations we've seen before. if it doesn't happen, the president wants that up or down vote on his plan. >> remember night, monday night is new year's eve when it all could go bad. >> and happy new year to you. >> thank you, gary. >>> and economists are warning that going over that fiscal cliff could pull us all back into recession. congress impressional democrats attended a new year's eve style rally saying the fiscal cliff ball is in

and also -- and you can tell me whether this is a dream come true -- what if nancy pelosi and john boehner kind of got together and nancy pelosi told boehner he could bring the votes for his speakership and then maybe together could isolate the tea party section of his group and take away some of the radical left of her group and bring the moderates together, support him for speakership. me, being a democrat, i would not get everything i want, but the republicans would get everything they wanted. by the time re-election came up they would have seen there was a lot of progress made and maybe they could not run primaries on those guys that decided to run to the middle with policy they laid out together. host: thank you for the call. guest: so many things. basically, you are assuming that john boehner would be elected speaker in a democratic house. it is not likely that they would give him their votes. it is far more likely, quite honestly, that the democrats would like to see continued disruption on the republican side. either way there would be a much-weakened speaker or he would be deposed

would give some advice to speaker boehner, he needs to talk to nancy pelosi. when nancy pelosi was speaker, she found a way even with maximum republican opposition to bring her diverse caucus. that is a caucus with diverse views together to get things done like the affordable care act. like dodd frank. she got it done. >> that's great advice, and we hope he listens. >> i hope so. >> thank you so much, my friend. >> my pleasure. >>> let's turn to ryan grim. mr. grim, the jobless are really the only segment of the population who get an immediate hit if we go over the fiscal cliff. doesn't this strike even what appears to be heartless politicians that the people most vulnerable are working class and working poor and middle class people who will get stiffed by this? >> yeah, the jobless have been getting pushed around by congress for years now, you know, ever since the economic crisis. and they implemented some extended emergency benefits they've been getting told that if they give them unemployment it will make them lazy and they will not look for jobs. states have insisted they d

there in the house of representatives? and specifically would any speaker, whether it's john boehner, nancy pelosi or anybody else, allow a bill to pass like this, especially one that violates four republican party doctrine that would raise taxes, would they allow it to -- and the answer to that is probably not. democrats have alleged for week now what john bain ser doing is waiting until the gavel is safely in his hands for the next congress. that happens on january 3rd, when they formally elect a speaker. that's one theory, but probably the thing that make the most sense is the fact that then it becomes a vote to cut taxes for 98% of americans, instead of allowing them to rise for 1% or 2%. that is something logically the republicans would probably or more likely go along with, though at this point who knows where we'll end up with on this thing. january 3rd is the new congress. in the days after that, that's the inertia it scenario. >> gentlemen, thanks so that. i appreciate it. >>> we want to bring in today's panel s perry bacon, democratic strategy margie omero, and chip saltzmann. i want to
